Bhutan, the Fascinating Himalayan Jewel, roughly the size of Switzerland is Bordered by two Giant Countries - India: East, South, west & China: North & Northwest and by Nepal. The Inhabitants of Bhutan are gracious people & very hospitable;
they are peace loving & posses a lively sense of humor.
Documented history of Bhutan dates back to 8th Century AD only with legendary flight of Guru Padmasambhava from Tibet in 747 AD. Considered as the Second Buddha he fled on the Back of a tigress, alighted in the tigers nest in the valley of Paro and began the propagation of the Tantric Strain of Mahayana Buddhism. In the ensuing centuries many great masters preached this faith resulting in full bloom of Buddhism by the Middle Centuries. Today the Bhutan is the last Mahayana Buddhist Kingdom, and the teachings are the living Faith among its People. An air of Spirituality is prevalent even in Urban centers, where the spinning of Prayer Wheels, the Murmur of Mantras, glow of Butter Lamps are still important features of Every Day life. Opened for Tourism only in the Year in 1974, after the Royal Coronation of the present king His Majesty Jigmye Singe Wangchuk, Bhutan is Perhaps the most exclusive destination of the Indian sub-continent. West Bengal (Darjeeling & Kalimpong) Darjeeling - Nestling in the grandeur and beauty of towering Satellite of snowcapped Kanchenjunga mountains, lies this jewel of a town with a past of elegance; sophisticated and beautiful. Located at an altitude of 2134 M as one ascends the Height, the vegetation changes to Firs, pines & fast moving torrents. Appx 4000 types of flowering plant species & 300 Species of ferns can be found in this region.
Kalimpong - Once the headquarters of a Bhutanese governor, Kalimpong is named after a black fiber plant grown in this region. Rich in Cultural & religious heritage, the fascinating scenic beauty & wonderful flora & fauna has a rich culture preserved. Its a quite resort town, ideal for those looking for isolation. Any one seriously interested in Horticulture can really look forward to a lot of excitement in the local nurseries. Sikkim:
Gangtok: the capital of Sikkim is tucked away in the clouds, on a ridge 5000 ft above sea level. In the mysterious mists prayer flags whip in the breeze against a backdrop of snow clad peaks and brightly painted pagoda shaped houses. An air of enchantment hangs over the entire valley with the sounds of the long trumpets reaching you across the hills. The capital of Bhutan, and the center of government, religion and commerce,
it is unique city, with an unusual mixture of modern development alongside
ancient tradition. Some places of interest are Tashichhodzong, (fortress
of the glorious religion) houses the main secretariat building, Simtokha
Dozng is one of the oldest fortresses of the Kingdom and now houses
School for Buddhist studies, Memorial Chorten, National Library, Traditional
Medicine Institute), Handicrafts Emporiums, Local Market.
